NEWS: From the Program Director
On Friday, July 9th, 2010, the Compostion & TESOL program will hold its annual reunion.
This year, the featured speaker will be Brian Huot., a graduate of the program in 1988 and currently the Director of Composition at Kent State University. He also teaches in the doctoral program in writing there. He is well known in the field for his research and publication on writing assessment. He has published a number of influential pieces and books that are cited very frequently in current work on writing assessment.
In the morning, Brian will meet with several students who are working on dissertation projects to discuss them in a roundtable format. All attending for the day are welcome. The time and place will be announced shortly.
The rest of the schedule for the day is as follows:
12:00/12:15 C&T Awards Ceremony and Luncheon
12:30-1:30 Brian's talk and Q&A
4:00 p.m. Picnic at Ben Rafoth's House
If you are planning on attending the lunch, please notify Ms. Bertha Cecconi in the English Graduate Office: bcecconi@iup.edu so that you will have food available. Anyone with special dietary needs shoulc inform Ms. Cecconi at that time so we may arrange for your needs.
Everyone should also plan to attend the picnic at Ben Rafoth's house at 4:00 pm. Directions to Ben's house will be posted on this website and sent through the C&T and MATESOL email lists.
Please let us know if any students or alumni who have not been contacted. We would like to put them on the email list to ensure that they are receiving information about this and future reunions, the C&T Newsletter, and other relevant information.

WHO: Lian-Aik Wong, PhD, '92
DISSERTATION: A descriptive analysis of the varieties of Singapore English - As recreated by Singapore writers of Fiction
BEFORE: I was a Lecturer at the English Language Proficiency Unit (ELPU), National University of Singapore.
AFTER: After serving as Director of my center for more than 13 years, I decided to step down from the position to return to full-time teaching and research. Currently I am taking my 6-month sabbatical and spending 4 months at the Centre for English and Applied Linguistics, Cambridge University.
WHO: Shanti Bruce, PhD, '05
DISSERTATION: An Analysis of Leadership Practices in Composition Studies
BEFORE: Before beginning the C&T program, I was teaching at the University of North Alabama. Go Lions!
AFTER: I co-authored (with Kevin Dvorak) Creative Approaches to Writing Center Work with Hampton Press. I chair the Master's in Writing Program, coordinate the Undergraduate Writing Program, and I am an assistant professor at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

DISSERTATION: Negotiating the Center: An Analysis of Writing Tutorial Interactions between ESL Learners and Native-English Speaking Writing Center Tutors
BEFORE: I finished a MATESOL program at West Virginia University, where I met my husband, George.
AFTER: I moved to Alaska immediately after IUP and worked at U. of Alaska Anchorage until 2007. Now I am at Salt Lake Community College. George and I have been tearing up the mountain biking trails in Utah since we moved here.
